Fried Onion Straws

Method

Fried Onion Straws

  1. 1

    Prepare the onions

Peel and slice the large onions into thin rings (about 1/8 inch thick). Separate the rings and set aside.

  2. 2

    Soak the onions

In a bowl, pour the buttermilk over the onion rings ensuring they are fully submerged. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will tenderize the onions and enhance flavor.

  3. 3

    Prepare the coating

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine all dry ingredients.

  4. 4

    Heat the oil

In a deep frying pan or a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small amount of the flour mixture into the oil; if it sizzles, it's ready.

  5. 5

    Coat the onion rings

Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk, shaking off any excess liquid. Dredge them in the flour mixture, ensuring each ring is well-coated.

  6. 6

    Fry the onion straws

Carefully place a handful of the coated onion rings into the hot oil. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for about 2-3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels.

  7. 7

    Serve

Once all onion straws are fried, serve them warm as a delicious side or topping. Enjoy!
