Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place the highball or large rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare ingredients, then discard water before assembling. A well-chilled glass keeps the drink colder longer and preserves tonic carbonation.

  2. 2

    Prepare ice and garnish

If using fresh lime, roll it firmly on the counter to loosen juices, then cut one thin wheel or wedge (reserve another wedge for squeezing if desired). If using cucumber, slice one thin ribbon or wheel. If using herb, gently slap the sprig between your palms once to release aroma.

  3. 3

    Add ice

Fill the chilled glass about three-quarters full with fresh ice cubes. Using fresh large ice cubes or one large sphere reduces quick dilution.

  4. 4

    Measure gin

Pour 2 oz (about 60 ml) of gin over the ice. A jigger or measuring pourer helps keep the balance consistent.

  5. 5

    Add tonic

Slowly pour 4 oz (about 120 ml) chilled tonic water down the side of the glass or over the back of a spoon to preserve carbonation. Pour gently so the tonic retains bubbles.

  6. 6

    Garnish and finish

Express the lime oils by holding the lime wheel or wedge over the glass and giving it a quick squeeze and twist so a few drops and oils fall onto the surface, then drop the garnish into the drink. Add optional cucumber slice or herb sprig on top. Do not stir vigorously; if needed, give one gentle stir with a bar spoon to integrate.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately while tonic is still fizzy. Leave a straw optional; the drink is typically sipped without one.
