Method
Preparation
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Whisk together until well blended.
- 2
Combine Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, finely chopped onion, and hot sauce until the mixture is smooth.
Mixing and Frying
- 3
Combine Mixtures
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix; small lumps are fine.
- 4
Heat Oil
In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Fry Hushpuppies
Using a spoon or cookie scoop, drop small balls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Ensure not to overcrowd the pan.
- 6
Drain Hushpuppies
Once golden brown, remove the hushpuppies using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
