Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Oysters

Rinse the fresh oysters under cold water to remove any sand or debris. Pat them dry with a paper towel.

  2. 2

    Soak in Buttermilk

Place the cleaned oysters in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Allow them to soak for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and add flavor.

Breading

  1. 3

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a shallow dish, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.

  2. 4

    Coat the Oysters

Remove the oysters from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Dredge each oyster in the flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated. Set aside.

Frying

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or a frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Fry the Oysters

Carefully add the breaded oysters to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Serving

  1. 7

    Arrange and Serve

Serve the fried oysters hot with lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side for dipping.
