Prepare the collard greens
Start by rinsing the collard greens thoroughly under cold water to remove any grit. Remove the tough stems and chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces.

Cook the bacon
In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pot.

Combine ingredients
Return the cooked bacon to the pot. Add the collard greens, chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.

Simmer
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the greens are tender.

Serve
Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot as a side dish.
