Fried Green Tomatoes
Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Season with salt and let sit for 10 minutes to draw out moisture.
- 2
Set Up Breading Station
In one bowl, mix the flour with black pepper and cayenne pepper. In a second bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, place the cornmeal.
- 3
Bread the Tomatoes
Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture, dip in buttermilk, and then coat with cornmeal. Repeat until all slices are breaded.
- 4
Fry the Tomatoes
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the breaded tomato slices in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
- 5
Cook the Shrimp
Season the shrimp with Old Bay seasoning. In another skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat and sauté the shrimp until pink and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- 6
Serve
Place fried green tomatoes on a plate, top with grilled shrimp, and serve with remoulade sauce on the side.
