Dough Ingredients

Method

Preparing the Dough

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Mix well to ensure the salt is evenly distributed.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the frothy yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough begins to form.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

  5. 5

    Let Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Shaping and Baking

  1. 6

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking stone or an inverted baking sheet inside to heat.

  2. 7

    Divide the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces.

  3. 8

    Shape Pita Rounds

Roll each piece into a ball and then use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.

  4. 9

    Bake the Pita

Carefully transfer the rolled pita rounds onto the preheated baking stone or sheet. Bake for 3-5 minutes, or until they puff up and turn lightly golden.

  5. 10

    Cool the Pita

Remove the baked pita from the oven and place them in a clean kitchen towel to keep warm. Repeat the baking process with the remaining pita rounds.
