Base Ingredients

Aromatics and Flavorings

Optional Garnishes

Method

Preparing the Base

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps keep the rice fluffy.

  2. 2

    Heat Butter and Oil

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with the olive oil until hot and shimmering.

  3. 3

    Toast the Rice

Add the rinsed and drained rice to the pan. Stir frequently for about 4–5 minutes until the rice turns lightly golden and develops a nutty aroma.

Cooking the Aromatics

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

Add the chopped onion to the pan and cook for 2–3 minutes until it becomes translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

  2. 5

    Add Seasonings

Stir in the salt, black pepper, and bay leaf to evenly distribute the flavors.

Simmering the Rice

  1. 6

    Add Broth

Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.

  2. 7

    Simmer Covered

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15–18 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.

  3. 8

    Rest the Pilaf

Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice.

Finishing Touches

  1. 9

    Fluff and Garnish

Remove the bay leaf, then use a fork to gently fluff the rice. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and toasted almonds, if desired, before serving.
