Method

Baklava Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This will ensure that your baklava cooks evenly.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out. You will be layering it in a baking dish.

  3. 3

    Melt the Butter

In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Nut Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Combine Nut Filling Ingredients

In a bowl, mix together the chopped pistachios, chopped walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon powder until well combined.

Layering the Baklava

  1. 5

    Layer Phyllo and Nut Mixture

Brush the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with more butter. Repeat this process for about 8 sheets. Then, spread a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Repeat the layering process (phyllo and nut mixture) until all the nuts are used, finishing with about 8 layers of phyllo on top.

  2. 6

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. This will help it to cook evenly and absorb the syrup better later.

Baking and Syrup Preparation

  1. 7

    Bake the Baklava

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.

  2. 8

    Make Sugar Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine water and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then add lemon juice. Allow the syrup to boil for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool.

  3. 9

    Pour Syrup Over Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over it, ensuring it seeps into the cuts you made earlier.

Serving

  1. 10

    Let it Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. Cut along the pre-marked lines again and serve in pieces.
