Pita Bread Ingredients

Method

Pita Bread Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough begins to form.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  6. 6

    Shape the Pitas

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and roll out to about 1/4 inch thick.

  7. 7

    Second Rise

Cover the rolled-out dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  8. 8

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking stone or a baking sheet inside to heat.

  9. 9

    Bake the Pitas

Carefully place the dough on the hot baking stone/sheet. Bake for about 3-4 minutes until puffed and lightly golden.

  10. 10

    Cool

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.

Assemble the Pita

  1. 11

    Prepare Fillings

While the pita is cooling, prepare your desired fillings by slicing cucumber, dicing tomato, and preparing any other toppings.

  2. 12

    Fill the Pita

Once the pitas are cool enough to handle, cut them in half to create pockets. Spread hummus inside each pocket and fill with cucumber, tomato, onion, feta, olives, and lettuce as desired.

  3. 13

    Serve

Serve immediately as a delicious appetizer or light meal.
