Baklava Dough

Nut Filling

Honey Syrup

Method

Preparing the Dough

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  3. 3

    Prepare Phyllo Dough

Carefully unroll the phyllo dough. Keep it covered with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out while you work.

Making the Nut Filling

  1. 4

    Chop the Nuts

In a food processor, combine the walnuts and pistachios. Pulse until finely chopped but not ground.

  2. 5

    Mix the Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped nuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

Assembling the Baklava

  1. 6

    Layer the Dough

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.

  2. 7

    Add the Nut Filling

Spread half of the nut filling evenly over the phyllo layers.

  3. 8

    Continue Layering

Add 4 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter as before. Add the remaining nut filling and top with another 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

  4. 9

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.

Baking

  1. 10

    Bake the Baklava

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Preparing the Honey Syrup

  1. 11

    Make the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes.

Finishing Touches

  1. 12

    Pour the Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup over it.

  2. 13

    Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. This will help the syrup soak in and the layers to set.
