Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Step 1: Prepare the Sorrel

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, add 2 cups of dried sorrel flowers, 1 tablespoon of grated ginger, and 5 whole cloves. Stir well to combine.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Steep the Mixture

Remove the pot from heat and cover. Let the mixture steep for about 2-3 hours or until it cools down to room temperature. This allows the flavors to infuse.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Strain the Liquid

Once the mixture has cooled, strain it through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a large pitcher to remove the solids. Discard the solids.

  4. 4

    Step 4: Sweeten the Drink

Add 1 cup of sugar to the strained liquid while it’s still warm. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.

  5. 5

    Step 5: Add Lime Juice

Stir in 1 tablespoon of lime juice for additional flavor.

  6. 6

    Step 6: Optional: Add Rum

If desired, add 1 cup of rum to the mixture for an alcoholic version. Stir well to combine.

  7. 7

    Step 7: Chill and Serve

Refrigerate the sorrel drink for a few hours until chilled. Serve over ice and enjoy!
