Method

Make the Dough

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the unsalted butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 2

    Form the Dough

Gradually add cold water, a little at a time, mixing with your hands until the dough comes together. Do not overwork the dough.

  3. 3

    Chill the Dough

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Prepare the Filling

  1. 4

    Cook the Filling

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine grated coconut, brown sugar, water, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from heat and let it cool.

Assemble and Bake

  1. 5

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Roll the Dough

On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out circles of dough that are about 4-5 inches in diameter.

  3. 7

    Fill the Dough

Place a spoonful of the coconut filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and crimp the edges to seal.

  4. 8

    Bake the Gizzadas

Place the filled gizzadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  5. 9

    Cool and Serve

Allow the gizzadas to cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy your delicious gizzadas!
