Method

Cooking Beans

  1. 1

    Soak the Beans

Rinse the dried pinto beans under cold water to remove any debris. Place them in a large bowl and cover with water. Soak the beans overnight or for at least 8 hours.

  2. 2

    Cook the Beans

After soaking, drain and rinse the beans. Place them in a large pot and add 4 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours or until the beans are tender.

Making Refried Beans

  1. 3

    Sauté Onion and Garlic

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

  2. 4

    Mash the Beans

Once the beans are cooked and tender, drain them, reserving a little cooking liquid. Add the beans to the skillet with sautéed onion and garlic. Use a potato masher to mash the beans to your desired consistency, adding reserved cooking liquid as needed to achieve a creamy texture.

  3. 5

    Season the Beans

Stir in cumin, salt, and black pepper. Continue to cook the mixture over low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to combine the flavors.
