Method
Crab Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Crabs
Rinse the soft shell crabs under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Remove the gills and any other inedible parts carefully.
- 2
Marinate in Buttermilk
Place the crabs in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let them marinate for at least 30 minutes to ensure they absorb moisture and flavor.
Batter Preparation
- 3
Prepare the Batter
In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and black pepper together until well combined.
Frying
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Batter the Crabs
Remove the crabs from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each crab in the flour mixture, coating both sides evenly.
- 6
Fry the Crabs
Carefully place the battered crabs in the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
