Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Oak Wood Smoke
Soak the oak wood chips in water for at least 30 minutes before use. This will allow them to smolder and create smoke without burning too quickly.
- 2
Mixing the Cocktail
- 3
Combine Ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 oz of Templeton Rye Whiskey, 0.5 oz of Fernet-Branca, and 0.5 tsp of vanilla extract.
- 4
Shake the Mixture
Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well chilled.
- 5
Strain into Glass
Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass.

Add Smoke
Using a smoke gun or a covered container, infuse the cocktail with the oak wood smoke for about 10 seconds. If you don’t have a smoke gun, simply cover the cocktail with a lid or a plate and let it sit for a couple of minutes to absorb the smoky flavor.

Garnish
Express the oils from a slice of orange peel over the drink and place it as a garnish on top.
