Chicken-Fried Steak

Method

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Steak

Pound the beef round steak to about 1/2 inch thickness. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In one bowl, combine flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and eggs.

  3. 3

    Bread the Steak

Dip each steak first in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk mixture, and finally back into the flour to coat evenly.

  4. 4

    Fry the Steak

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the breaded steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Make Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Boil potatoes until tender. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper to taste.

  6. 6

    Make the Gravy

In the same skillet used for frying, remove excess oil, leaving about 2 tablespoons. Whisk in flour and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually add chicken broth while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook until thickened.

  7. 7

    Serve

Plate the chicken-fried steak with a generous serving of garlic mashed potatoes and top with country gravy.
