Dry Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

For the Corn Dogs

Method

Preparing the Batter

  1. 1

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk together until well mixed.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are fine.

Preparing the Corn Dogs

  1. 4

    Prepare the Hot Dogs

Insert a wooden skewer into each hot dog, pushing it in about halfway to create a handle.

  2. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

  3. 6

    Coat the Hot Dogs

Dip each hot dog into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow excess batter to drip off.

  4. 7

    Fry the Corn Dogs

Carefully lower the battered hot dogs into the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Turn occasionally for even cooking.

  5. 8

    Drain and Serve

Once golden brown, remove the corn dogs from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with mustard or ketchup.
