Caramel Sauce (Optional)

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

Add all-purpose flour, salt, and melted unsalted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let it Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Boiling

  1. 5

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 6

    Shape the Pretzel

After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 2 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope (about 24 inches) and shape it into a pretzel form.

  3. 7

    Prepare Baking Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda.

  4. 8

    Boil the Pretzel

Carefully place each shaped pretzel in the boiling baking soda bath for about 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.

  5. 9

    Add Toppings

Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the pretzels before baking.

Baking

  1. 10

    Bake the Pretzel

Bake the pretzels in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Optional Sauces

  1. 11

    Cheese Sauce Preparation

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in milk and bring to a simmer. Add cheddar cheese and salt, stirring until smooth and creamy.

  2. 12

    Caramel Sauce Preparation

In a saucepan, melt granulated sugar over medium heat until it turns amber. Stir in butter until melted, then gradually add heavy cream while stirring until smooth.
