Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Gather Your Tools

Before you start cutting the onion, gather your tools: a sharp chef's knife, a cutting board, and a bowl for the chopped onion.

  2. 2

    Peel the Onion

Place the onion on the cutting board. Using the chef's knife, slice off the top (the non-root end) of the onion. Then, slice off the bottom (the root end) but leave a small portion of the root intact to hold the onion together while cutting.

  3. 3

    Remove the Skin

With the knife, make a shallow cut along the side of the onion to start peeling away the skin. Remove the outer layers of the onion's skin until you reach the white flesh of the onion.

  4. 4

    Cut the Onion in Half

Place the onion flat side down on the cutting board for stability. Carefully cut the onion in half from top to bottom through the root.

  5. 5

    Slice the Onion

Take one half of the onion and lay it flat on the cutting board. Make even slices from the top towards the root, being careful not to cut through the root itself. Repeat with the other half.

  6. 6

    Chop the Onion (Optional)

If you prefer chopped onion, turn the sliced onion 90 degrees and cut across the slices to create small, diced pieces. Repeat with the other half.

  7. 7

    Transfer to Bowl

Use a spatula or your hands to transfer the chopped or sliced onion into a bowl for use in your recipe.
