1. Prepare the Ingredients

Wash and slice the tomato, purple onion, and prepare the lettuce and pickles.

2. Form the Patties

Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and gently form into balls without overworking the meat.

3. Cook the Patties

Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the beef balls on the surface and smash them down using a spatula to form patties. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Add Cheese

Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes until a crust forms, then flip and immediately place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted.

5. Toast the Buns

While the cheese is melting, split the burger buns and toast them on a separate skillet or griddle until golden brown.

6. Assemble the Burgers

Spread mayonnaise on the bottom bun, then layer with lettuce, the cooked patty with melted cheese, tomato slices, purple onion, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Top with the other half of the bun.

7. Serve

Serve the smash burgers immediately and enjoy!
