Beignet Ingredients

Method

Beignet Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a small bowl, warm the milk until it is lukewarm. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, beaten egg, and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead and Rise

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.

  3. 3

    Roll and Cut

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into squares or rectangles with a knife or pastry cutter.

  4. 4

    Fry the Beignets

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the beignets in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Serve

Dust the warm beignets with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy while hot!
