Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (110°F) with sugar and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, egg, and melted butter to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 6

    Cook Sausage

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain excess fat.

  2. 7

    Sauté Vegetables

In the same skillet, add chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent.

  3. 8

    Combine Filling Ingredients

In a bowl, mix the cooked sausage, sautéed onion and garlic, cheddar cheese, black pepper, and parsley (if using).

Assembly and Baking

  1. 9

    Shape the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 10

    Add Filling

Spread the sausage filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

  3. 11

    Roll the Dough

Carefully roll the dough from one end to the other, sealing the edges as you go.

  4. 12

    Second Rise

Place the rolled dough seam-side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover with a cloth and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

  5. 13

    Preheat Oven

While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  6. 14

    Bake the Bread

Once the dough has risen, bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before slicing.
