Fried Okra Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Okra
Wash and dry the okra. Cut off the tops and tails, then slice into approximately 1/2-inch thick rounds.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
- 3
Coat the Okra
Dip the okra slices into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture until well coated.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot.
- 5
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 6
Serve
Serve hot as a side dish or snack, optionally with a dipping sauce.
