Caramel
Custard Base
Method
Caramel Preparation
Make the Caramel
In a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar and water. Place over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
Cook the Caramel
Once the sugar has dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to come to a boil. Continue boiling until the syrup turns a deep amber color, about 10 minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
Coat the Flan Mold
Immediately pour the hot caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
Custard Preparation
Combine Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
Pour into Mold
Carefully pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the prepared mold.
Prepare for Baking
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold in a larger baking dish and fill the outer dish with hot water to create a water bath.
Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool and Chill
Remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Once cool, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Serving
Unmold the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert it onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to drizzle over the top.
Slice and Enjoy
Slice the flan into wedges and serve chilled. Enjoy your delicious homemade flan!
