Method
Prepare Taco Shells
Choose Your Shell
Decide if you want soft tortillas or crispy taco shells. If using soft tortillas, warm them in a skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side until they are pliable. If using crispy taco shells, preheat the oven according to package instructions and bake for the recommended time.
Prepare Fillings
Cook Ground Beef or Chicken
In a skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the ground beef or diced chicken breast. Cook until browned (about 5-7 minutes for beef, 10-12 minutes for chicken), stirring occasionally.
Add Taco Seasoning
Once the meat is cooked, drain any excess fat if necessary. Sprinkle the taco seasoning over the meat. Add a splash of water (about 1/4 cup) and stir well to combine. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until the seasoning is well mixed.
Prepare Black Beans (if using)
If you choose to use black beans, heat them in a small saucepan over medium heat until warmed through, adding a little salt if desired.
Assemble Tacos
Fill Your Tacos
Take a taco shell and fill it with your desired filling (ground beef, chicken, or black beans).
Add Toppings
Top the filling with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and sliced jalapeños to taste.
Serve
Repeat the filling and topping process for the remaining taco shells. Serve immediately with lime wedges if desired.
