Flan

Method

Flan

1

Prepare the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add 1 cup of sugar. Stir continuously until it melts and turns a golden brown color. Quickly pour the caramel into a round cake pan, tilting the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool.

2

Blend Flan Mixture

In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth.

3

Bake the Flan

Pour the flan mixture over the caramel in the cake pan. Place the pan in a larger baking dish and fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 50-60 minutes, or until set. Let it cool, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Sopapillas

4

Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rest for about 30 minutes.

5

Fry the Sopapillas

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut into triangles or squares. Fry the dough in the hot oil until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels. Drizzle with honey before serving.

Serving

6

Plate the Dish

Once the flan has set and the sopapillas are ready, slice the flan and place it on a serving plate. Add one scoop of chocolate ice cream and one scoop of vanilla ice cream next to the flan. Arrange the sopapillas around the flan and ice cream for a beautiful presentation.
