Method

Burger Patty Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Beans

In a large bowl, mash the canned black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but with some texture remaining.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

Add the cooked quinoa, rolled oats, finely chopped red onion, minced garlic, cumin powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, olive oil, and chopped cilantro to the mashed beans. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.

  3. 3

    Form Patties

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, about 1 inch thick.

  4. 4

    Chill Patties

Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to help them firm up.

Cooking Patties

  1. 5

    Heat Oil

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 6

    Cook Patties

Carefully add the chilled patties to the skillet and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  3. 7

    Remove from Heat

Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

Assembly

  1. 8

    Prepare Buns

Toast the whole grain burger buns lightly if desired.

  2. 9

    Assemble Burgers

On the bottom half of each bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by a veggie patty, slices of tomato, avocado, and red onion rings. Add ketchup and mustard to taste.

  3. 10

    Serve

Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.
