Preparation
1. Prepare the Filling
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced Granny Smith apples, fresh cranberries, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon juice, and chopped walnuts. Mix well to combine and let it sit for about 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
2. Prepare the Pie Crust
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out a deep dish pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie dish, ensuring it covers the sides and bottom. Trim any excess dough hanging over the edge.
3. Fill the Pie
Pour the apple and cranberry filling into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly.
4. Top with Crust
Roll out another pie crust or use lattice strips to create a top for the pie. Seal the edges by crimping them together. Cut a few slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
5. Bake the Pie
Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for about 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Check the pie halfway through; if the edges brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil.
6. Cool and Serve
Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with vanilla ice cream.
