Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Macaroni

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water for flavor.

  2. 2

    Cook the Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions, usually around 7-8 minutes, stirring occasionally until al dente.

  3. 3

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt the Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter has melted, whisk in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour. Cook for about 1 minute until it forms a roux and turns a light golden color.

  3. 6

    Pour in Milk

Gradually add 2 cups of milk to the roux, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Once the sauce has thickened slightly, reduce the heat to low and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

  5. 8

    Season the Sauce

Add salt and black pepper to taste, stirring to combine.

Combining

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni back into the pot with the cheese sauce. Stir until the pasta is well coated with the sauce.

  2. 10

    Serve

Serve the Kraft Mac & Cheese warm, garnished with extra cheese or herbs if desired.
