Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta (if using)

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Cooking the Marinara Sauce

  1. 2

    Sauté the Garlic

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic cloves and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.

  2. 3

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, and add the dried oregano, dried basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.

  3. 4

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

  4. 5

    Add Fresh Basil

Just before serving, tear the fresh basil leaves and stir them into the sauce for a burst of flavor.

Serving

  1. 6

    Combine and Serve

If you cooked pasta, add it to the marinara sauce and toss to combine. Serve warm with grated Parmesan cheese on top, if desired.
