Method

Cooking Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pork

In a large pot, add the pork shoulder, salt, cumin, garlic powder, chili powder, and black pepper. Cover with chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 2 hours until the pork is tender.

  2. 2

    Shred the Pork

Remove the pork from the pot and let it cool slightly. Shred the meat using two forks and set aside.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Masa

In a mixing bowl, combine the corn masa and vegetable oil. Gradually add the reserved chicken broth from cooking the pork until the mixture is smooth and spreadable.

  4. 4

    Soak the Corn Husks

Soak the corn husks in warm water for about 30 minutes until pliable.

  5. 5

    Assemble the Tamales

Take a soaked corn husk, spread about 1/4 cup of masa mixture on the husk, leaving space at the edges. Add a tablespoon of shredded pork in the center. Fold the sides of the husk over the filling, then fold the bottom up to secure it.

  6. 6

    Steam the Tamales

Place the tamales upright in a steamer basket. Cover and steam for about 1 hour, until the masa is firm and cooked through.

  7. 7

    Serve

Once cooked, remove from the steamer and let them cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite Mexican sauce.
