Method
Custard Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar with 1/4 cup of water. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then allow it to boil without stirring until it turns a deep amber color. Immediately pour the caramel into the bottom of individual custard cups, swirling to coat the bottom.

Bake the Custard
Pour the custard mixture over the caramel in the cups. Place the cups in a baking dish and fill the dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cups. Bake in a preheated oven at 325°F (160°C) for about 40-50 minutes, or until set.

Cool and Serve
Once set, remove the custard cups from the water bath and let them cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. To serve, run a knife around the edges and invert onto a plate to release the caramel.
