Method
Cooking Pasta
Boil Water
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil.
Cook Penne
Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes.
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.
Making the Sauce
Sauté Garlic and Chili Flakes
Add the minced garlic and red chili flakes to the pan. Sauté for about 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant but not browned.
Add Crushed Tomatoes
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, stirring well to combine with the garlic and chili flakes.
Season the Sauce
Add salt and black pepper to the sauce. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Incorporate Fresh Basil
Stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper if needed. If the sauce is too thick, add a bit of reserved pasta water.
Combining Pasta and Sauce
Combine
Add the drained penne pasta to the sauce. Toss gently to combine, ensuring all the pasta is well coated with the sauce.
Serve
Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and additional fresh basil if desired.
