Method
Dough Preparation
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Mix Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture along with olive oil.
- 3
Knead Dough
Mix until the dough starts to come together, then turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Let Dough Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Assembling Pizza
- 5
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) with a pizza stone if you have one, or a baking sheet.
- 6
Shape Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to your desired thickness, about 12 inches in diameter.
- 7
Add Sauce
Transfer the rolled-out dough to a pizza peel or baking sheet. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the surface of the dough.
- 8
Add Cheese and Basil
Tear the fresh mozzarella cheese into pieces and distribute evenly over the sauce. Sprinkle with salt to taste, and scatter the fresh basil leaves on top.
- 9
Drizzle Olive Oil
Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil over the assembled pizza.
- 10
Bake Pizza
Carefully transfer the pizza to the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
- 11
Cool and Serve
Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Enjoy your Margherita pizza!
