Chocolate Cake Layers and Frosting

Method

Preparation and Assembly

1

Prepare the Cake Layers

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3

Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.

4

Gradually stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.

5

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

6

Make the Chocolate Ganache

In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer.

7

Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips. Let sit for a few minutes, then stir until smooth.

8

Allow the ganache to cool and thicken slightly.

9

Assemble the Cake

Once the cake layers are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate.

10

Spread a layer of chocolate ganache on top, followed by the second layer of cake.

11

Cover the entire cake with the remaining ganache, smoothing it out with a spatula.

12

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set the ganache before serving.
