Fried Oysters

Method

Fried Oysters

  1. 1

    Prepare the Oysters

Rinse the Gulf oysters under cold water and drain well. Pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Make the Dredging Mixture

In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

  3. 3

    Soak the Oysters

Pour buttermilk into a shallow dish. Dip each oyster into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture until evenly coated. Set aside on a plate.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a heavy skillet or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Oysters

Carefully add oysters to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels.

Sides

  1. 6

    Prepare the Fries

While the oysters are frying, cook the frozen French fries according to package instructions until they are crispy and golden.

  2. 7

    Prepare the Hushpuppies

If using store-bought hushpuppies, follow the package instructions to heat them thoroughly. If making from scratch, prepare your favorite recipe.

  3. 8

    Serve

Once the oysters are fried and the sides are ready, serve the fried oysters with fries, hushpuppies, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce on the side.
