For the Ranch Dressing

Method

Preparing the Fried Okra

  1. 1

    Prep the Okra

Wash the okra thoroughly, trim the ends, and slice it into 1/2-inch thick rounds.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Breading Station

In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk until smooth.

  3. 3

    Coat the Okra

Dip the sliced okra into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Then, coat it in the flour-cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to adhere. Repeat until all okra is coated.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large heavy pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  5. 5

    Fry the Okra

Carefully drop the coated okra into the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Making the Ranch Dressing

  1. 6

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, dried dill, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix until smooth and well combined.

  2. 7

    Adjust Seasoning

Taste the ranch dressing and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

  3. 8

    Chill the Dressing

Cover and refrigerate the ranch dressing for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
