Method

Preparation of Filling

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Rinse 1 cup of long-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Sauté the Onion

In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add 1 finely chopped medium onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Mix the Filling

In the skillet with the onions, add the rinsed rice, 1 cup of chopped fresh parsley, 1 cup of chopped fresh dill, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir well to combine.

  4. 4

    Add Liquid

Pour in 1.5 cups of water or vegetable broth into the skillet. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes until the rice is partially cooked and the liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat and let cool.

Rolling Grape Leaves

  1. 5

    Prepare Grape Leaves

Lay one grape leaf on a flat surface, stem side up. Place 1-2 tablespoons of the filling near the stem end of the leaf.

  2. 6

    Roll the Leaves

Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling, then roll from the stem end to the tip, creating a tight roll. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.

Cooking Stuffed Grape Leaves

  1. 7

    Prepare Cooking Liquid

In a bowl, mix 2 cups of water or vegetable broth with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

  2. 8

    Arrange the Stuffed Leaves

Place the stuffed grape leaves seam side down in a large pot. Pour the cooking liquid over the leaves until they are just covered.

  3. 9

    Cook the Leaves

Cover the pot and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 30-40 minutes until the grape leaves are tender and the filling is fully cooked.

  4. 10

    Serve

Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature, drizzled with olive oil or accompanied by lemon wedges.
