Cream Cheese Frosting

Method

Preparing the Cake

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, eggs, buttermilk, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cakes

Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Making the Frosting

  1. 7

    Prepare the Frosting

In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and unsalted butter together until smooth and creamy.

  2. 8

    Add Sugar and Vanilla

Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well after each addition. Finally, stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

  3. 9

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
