Method

Base Mixture Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are okay.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Prepare the Pan

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with cooking spray or butter.

  2. 5

    Pour Batter

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.

  3. 6

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Topping Preparation

  1. 7

    Prepare Topping

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon until well combined and bubbly.

  2. 8

    Add Nuts

If using, stir in the chopped nuts to the butter mixture and remove from heat.

  3. 9

    Top the Base

Once the base is baked, remove it from the oven and pour the topping over the warm cake, spreading it evenly.

Serving

  1. 10

    Cool and Serve

Allow the topped cake to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing into squares and serving.
