Method
Preparing the Meatballs
- 1
Mix Meatball Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined, but do not overwork the meat.
- 2
Form Meatballs
Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs about 1 inch in diameter. Place the formed meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 3
Chill Meatballs
Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and refrigerate the meatballs for at least 30 minutes to help them firm up.
Making the Sauce
- 4
Sauté Onion and Garlic
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- 5
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, sugar, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cooking the Meatballs
- 6
Cook Meatballs
After the meatballs have chilled, carefully add them to the sauce in the skillet. Cover and allow the meatballs to simmer in the sauce for about 25-30 minutes, until cooked through.
- 7
Serve
Once cooked, serve the meatballs hot with the sauce over pasta, in a sub, or on their own. Garnish with additional parsley and Parmesan cheese if desired.
