Method
Making the Dough
- 1
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Mix Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Mix until a dough forms, then turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- 4
First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Assembling the Sandwich Rolls
- 5
Prepare the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces.
- 6
Shape the Rolls
Roll each piece of dough into a ball and then flatten it into a circle about 5 inches in diameter.
- 7
Add Fillings
Layer the sliced deli meats, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and any optional toppings on one half of each circle. Spread mustard or mayonnaise on top.
- 8
Close the Rolls
Fold the other half of the dough over the fillings and pinch the edges to seal.
- 9
Second Rise
Place the assembled rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Baking the Sandwich Rolls
- 10
Preheat the Oven
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- 11
Bake the Rolls
Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 12
Cool and Store
Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, they can be stored in an airtight container or wrapped for freezing.
