Onion Preparation

Method

Onion Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onion

Start by cutting the top off the onion and peeling the outer skin. Carefully cut the onion from the top down into quarters (not cutting all the way through), leaving the root intact. Fan out the onion petals gently.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.

  3. 3

    Prepare Wet Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until smooth.

  4. 4

    Coat the Onion

Dunk the prepared onion into the wet mixture, ensuring it gets into the petals. Then, transfer it to the dry mixture and coat thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour.

Dipping Sauce

  1. 5

    Mix the Sauce

In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and salt. Mix well until smooth and set aside.

Frying

  1. 6

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 7

    Fry the Onion

Carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil and fry for about 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  3. 8

    Serve

Serve hot with the dipping sauce on the side.
