Rinse the clams under cold water to remove any sand or grit. Soak them in fresh water for about 30 minutes, then rinse again.

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant. If using white wine, add it now and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes. For red sauce, add the tomato sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.

Add the clams to the skillet, covering it with a lid. Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the clams open. Discard any that do not open.

Stir in chopped parsley and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
