Method
Cake Preparation
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3
- 4
Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- 5
Add Boiling Water
Stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.
- 6
Bake the Cakes
Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 7
Cool the Cakes
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then carefully turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Icing Preparation
- 8
Make the Icing
In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, and mix until smooth.
- 9
Add Vanilla
Stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
- 10
Frost the Cake
Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate, spread a layer of icing on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
