Calamari
Marinara Sauce
Method
Calamari
- 1
Prepare the Squid
Begin by slicing the cleaned squid tubes into rings about 1/2 inch thick.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder.
- 3
Coat the Squid
Dip the squid rings into the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge them in the flour mixture until fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- 4
- 5
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated squid rings to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain.
Marinara Sauce
- 6
- 7
Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
- 8
Simmer the Sauce
Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- 9
Serve
Once the calamari is fried and the marinara sauce is ready, serve the fried calamari with the marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
