Method

Prepare the Onion Straws

  1. 1

    Soak the onions

In a bowl, soak the thinly sliced onion in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and flavor.

  2. 2

    Coat the onions

In a separate bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Remove the onions from the buttermilk and coat them with the flour mixture.

  3. 3

    Fry the onions

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Once hot, fry the coated onions in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Cook the Beef and Vegetables

  1. 4

    Sauté the peppers and onions

In a large skillet, add a bit of oil over medium-high heat. Add sliced green and red bell peppers along with the sliced onion. Sauté until they are tender, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 5

    Cook the steak

Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak to the skillet with the peppers and onions. Season with salt and pepper, cooking until the steak is browned and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes.

  3. 6

    Melt the cheese

Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the beef and vegetable mixture. Cover the skillet and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until the cheese has melted.

Assemble the Sandwiches

  1. 7

    Prepare the hoagie rolls

Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise, ensuring not to cut all the way through.

  2. 8

    Add the filling

Spoon the beef, pepper, and melted cheese mixture into each hoagie roll.

  3. 9

Top with onion straws and sauce

Top each sandwich with crispy onion straws and drizzle with cherry pepper sauce.
