Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil over high heat. Add a generous pinch of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Macaroni

Once the water is boiling, add the elbow macaroni. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once melted, sprinkle the flour over the butter and whisk continuously for about 1 minute to create a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Remove the pot from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and paprika until smooth and creamy.

Combining and Serving

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until evenly coated.

  2. 9

    Prepare Topping (optional)

If using, mix the breadcrumbs, grated parmesan cheese, and melted butter together in a bowl.

  3. 10

    Bake (optional)

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

  4. 11

    Serve

Serve hot as a side dish or main course, enjoying your delicious homemade mac & cheese.
