Fried Green Tomatoes
Spicy Aioli
Method
Fried Green Tomatoes
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Wash the green tomatoes and slice them into 1/2 inch thick slices. Set aside.
- 2
Set Up Dredging Station
In three separate shallow dishes, place the buttermilk in one, the flour mixed with salt, black pepper, and cayenne in the second, and the cornmeal in the third.
- 3
Dredge the Tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice first in the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then coat in the seasoned flour, followed by the cornmeal. Make sure each slice is fully coated.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering but not smoking.
- 5
Fry the Tomatoes
Carefully add the coated tomato slices to the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- 6
Drain and Prepare to Serve
Once fried, transfer the tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Crumble goat cheese on top while still hot.
Spicy Aioli
- 7
Prepare the Aioli
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, minced garlic, lemon juice, and hot sauce. Mix until smooth.
- 8
Season the Aioli
Add salt to taste and adjust the hot sauce if a spicier flavor is desired. Mix well.
